You could use a much smaller engine to generate enough power to support the load in an average house as long is you were somewhat conservative in energy use. The largest consuming appliances would be and electric range and electric hot water heater. Depending on size of these appliances they would generally consume about 8 to 10 kW. Average demand is about 5 kW and peak demand would be about 20 kW, depending on the size of the house.
Ideally, you can covert 1 hp to 0.75 kW. In practical terms, figure about 1.5 hp per kW or 30 hp per 20 kW. This kind of power can be handled by a small engine.
Ya it could be made to work. 1HP is 746 watts. So lets say you run your engine at 100HP, you’d have 75kW. A typical house might need 10kW, so you’d be able to power a half dozen houses.
You’d need a cooling solution if you’re going to run an IC engine at high output in a stationary position.
Depending on the engine horsepower at least 50 to 100 KW if there was a way to couple the specific engine to a generator.
You would have to calculate the maximum instantaneous power requirements for your house to know if this would be enough power.
