To build an electric generator unit you need three key elements: a rotor, a stator, and something to turn them. A car alternator is part of a generator - it has a rotor and a stator, but the car's engine provides the turning.
You can start with the rotor. To make a rotor, place magnets on a disk so that a north side magnet is next to a south side magnet. If you use four, then you would have north poles facing 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock; and south poles pointing to 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
The next step is to make a stator. For this step, you wrap fine wire around strips of cardboard about 200 times, and then remove the cardboard. Tape these coils with electrical tape to another disk and alternate between a clockwise coil and a counter clockwise coil in the same pattern as for the magnets. Then, connect the wire coils together.
When you place the magnet side of the rotor close to but not touching the wire coils on the stator with an axle, and spin the rotor, electricity is caused to flow. If you wire this to a small light bulb or motor, you can use that power. Conversely, if you made one from an alternator and gas engine you could have enough power to watch TV!
So, all you need to build electric generator units are stators, rotors, and a way to spin them. Build an electric generator with some cardboard, copper wire, and magnets, or you can build an electric generator with an old engine and alternator from a car, the process is about the same.
